Finkbuilt Gallery Presents: About this exhibition
BECKY HARBINE - Wieny ManSold
Artist

Becky Harbine whips up a mean horse d'eurve, and plays shows with here band Little Champions.

Could you tell the visitors about your Lure?

The shape of it brought to mind the iconic hot-dog man seen in various formats--illustrations, giant plastic 3-D versions, people in hot dog suits, etc. I love animated food, so it just seemed natural to come up with my own Wieny Man.

How did you end up being an artist?

Because I couldn't think of anything else to major in during college, and people seemed to think i had some talent...?! These days I don't make much visual art, most of my creative energy goes to writing music in my band, Little Champions.

Who are some of your greatest artistic influences?

This is a tough one. I don't really follow what's happening in the artworld at all, so I am quite detached from it--I don't really think of it as influential on my path. Some big names whose art I love: Joan Miro, Cindy Sherman, Francis Bacon, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, Willem de Kooning, Ann Magnuson.

What music do you have in heavy rotation right now?

The Knife, Leonard Cohen, Amy Winehouse, Arcade Fire, Deerhoof, Harry Belafonte, LCD Soundsystem.

What do you do for fun?

Play music, hang with my fabulouse son and husband, cook and eat delicious food, and spend time with friends.

When was the last time you went fishing?

Probably more than 15 years ago...sad but true. Does pulling in crab pots count?

Do you have any words of wisdom for new or aspiring artists?

Do what you know, what you love, and what challenges you. A bit trite, but I've found it to be true in my experience.
